Ryan Tansley - Owner and Head Coach
Ryan became the owner of CrossFit Harrogate on 19th February 2016, here is what he has to say;
"As a boy / teenager I was a keen tennis player and played junior tennis at county level, the LTA sponsored me through my A levels and University and gave me invaluable training and experience of coaching at all levels.
I was introduced to CrossFit in March 2011 after sharing accommodation with owner and head coach of CrossFit Glevum, Dan Crisp. After completing my first workout I knew this is what could take my Tennis and health to the next level. I enjoyed the community aspect to it, which was very similar to University Tennis.
I quickly found that CrossFit significantly increased my athletic ability on the court. After just a few weeks my coaches and teammates noticed a significant difference in my fitness, I was stronger, faster and healthier. As my fitness went from strength to strength I wanted to share my passion for CrossFit with others. To increase my knowledge further I became a CrossFit Level 1 certified coach in early 2012,
I became head coach at CrossFit Harrogate over two years ago. As a coach I am passionate about applying my knowledge gained from years of Tennis and CrossFit coaching to support members and help them achieve their goals. this is something I look forward to everyday. I also enjoy the competitive aspect of CrossFit having entered many competitions as an individual and part of a team."

I've always been active and interested in sports, it's just something I've always done. Over the years I've tried (and had a little success) in all kinds of things; football, cricket, golf, most raquet sports you can name, American footbal, running, swimming and triathlon - to name a few!
After an operation in 2010 I started to focus on bodyweight training as part of the rehabilitation and whilst looking for inspiration I happened across this thing called CrossFit. I took the plunge and joined a box in 2011 and I've not looked back. CrossFit has everything I want in a strength & conditioning programme. It's structured, progressive, challenging, varied and allows me to constantly monitor my progress. Added to that it has a supportive community spirit that I've never experienced in any other gym environment.
What's not to like?!
I've visited a number of CrossFit gyms in the UK, Europe and USA. It's the same everywhere; the welcome will be warm, people will encourage you to push yourself and will genuinely want you to have fun in their company.
After a couple of years of making progress and really enjoying CrossFit I decided to I wanted to understand more of the philosophy and methodologies of this thing that had become such a big part of my life. I've been a qualified CrossFit Level 1 coach since April 2014 and as a result I'm loving CrossFit all the more!
Whilst it's too early to have a coaching philosophy of my own I'll paraphrase another organisation for now; Educate, Inform, Encourage. I guess that sums it up for me.

“I’m not sure who said this first, but we should always remember: fitness is not about being better than someone else...it’s about being better than you used to be.”
Paul has been doing CrossFit for four years now. He started at CrossFit Harrogate as a member to improve his general fitness. Having quickly found his passion for the sport he increased his training and his fitness flourished. Over time his interest within CrossFit became focused on helping others and so, with that in mind, he successfully completed the CrossFit level 1 trainers course. After completing his 'in house' training, working alongside the Head Coach and other members of the coaching team, we are very proud and delighted that Paul has made the transition from a valued member of our community to a fully fledged member of the coaching team.
“Since starting CrossFit I have seen my fitness go from strength to strength, I did struggle with some movements but with perseverance and great coaching I am continuously improving. I now have the privilege to help other members increase their fitness and work towards achieving their personal goals and I find that very rewarding."
