Reminder - Schedule Changes Effective 08 July

Just a quick reminder of the planned changes to some of the coached session timings going forward. We are aware that some of the sessions on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday can get a little crowded. To help alleviate this, we will be trialling running 3 sessions on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Starting from 8th July, the sessions will run at 17:30, 18:30 and 19:30. Once these are up and running, we would welcome your feedback.

UPDATE: Armed Forces Day - Saturday 29th June 2013

Coming out to play on Saturday afternoon? - Games and picnicking on the Stray

All members, family and friends are welcome.

Please bring any sports equipment you may have that you think might be fun – as a minimum we are going to need a football, a tennis racquet, tennis balls. But you may have something else – please let us know.

Meet at 3pm on the Stray opposite Cotswold Centre.

Please bring your picnic – the more paleo the better – perhaps those in the Foodie Group could suggest some ideas?

There is paid on-street parking there or car parks just behind the COOK and The Coach and Horses pub. Alternatively there is disc parking on Beech Grove which is the first left as you drive down passing the Cotswold Centre on your right hand side.

As a fall back, if the weather is not good we can always reconvene at the box.

Please respond to this message either on Facebook or on the Crossfit Gym Harrogate website to give us an idea of numbers but you can also just show up.

Look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Gymnastics Seminar - 10 August

On Saturday the 10th of August, CrossFit Harrogate will be offering a gymnastics seminar hosted by Ryan Naish.  The course, which will be held from 1300-1600, will focus on correct form and technique in gymnastics movements, specifically the press up, ring rows, skin the cat, hollow positions, ring dips and muscle ups. The class is limited to 20 athletes, so if you are interested please sign up via Team Up (Schedules).  The cost of the class is £15 and we request that you pay in cash at the Box once you have registered online to reserve your spot.  If you have any questions, please contact Ryan (ryan@crossfitharrogate.com) or Kate (kate@crossfitharrogate.com).  Thank you!

Armed Forces Day Activities

CrossFit Harrogate will be having a bit of a do on Saturday, 29 June 2013 to mark Armed Forces Day. CrossFit boxes all over the UK will mark the occasion, each in their own way. Our plan is to kick off the day at the box at 0900. Bring family, kids over 12 and friends to have a low impact, fun CrossFit WOD (show them what we are all about!). This will run for around 90 mins.

Then get across to the Stray for 1500 for an afternoon of games, picnic and socialising. Friends, partners and kids of any age welcome. Bring some food and drink if you are picnicking and if you have a game you want to play, bring the kit. A football or a rounders / baseball bat and ball etc, you choose. Rules can be amended to make it easier for the adults to keep up with the kids!! (If it rains, we can go back and play /eat in the box) We may even shuffle off for an evening out in Harrogate if you are game!

If you are interested in any of the Armed Forces Day activities, please drop a mail to kate@crossfitharrogate.com to give us an idea of numbers.

CrossFit Induction - A members view. In the beginning!

One of the ladies on the current induction (started 22nd April 2013) decided to keep a written record of her thoughts, feelings and experiences both before and during the induction. These are her words, unedited and she has very kindly agreed to us featuring them on our blog and FB page.

In the beginning gives an insight into how she felt in the run up to starting the induction.

Monday 15th April
I've just sat with Gio and gone through the plan for approximately the next 12 weeks. So what am I hoping for? Well, I'd like to lose some weight. I want to shape my body from the rather frumpy size 12 to a more lean and toned version of myself, and I'd like a PB on a half marathon this year. Are these realistic objectives?
Losing a stone? Lets set my expectations right now! Unlikely I'll lose a stone. The plan I'm going to follow will build muscle, we all know muscle weighs more than fat, so have decided to take measurements at the start of the programme and track those instead.
Shaping my body - this is (hopefully) what Crossfit is all about - core strength. So lets see - Simon and Gio tell me I will see a difference (I wont miss those love handles I'm currently carrying around that's for sure!)
PB on a half marathon. Lets see. I'm lazy in my training. When I first started running I was really disciplined - following training plans, varying my training. Now I have lost all enthusiasm. I did the Great North Run in 2012 in 2h 30 after 6 training runs - shocking. I'm bored of the long training runs. I jog, spend most of my time thinking about how long until I walk a bit and generally cant wait to get back within the first few minutes of setting off. I never used to be like that and I want to get back into the spirit of it. I've done 4 half marathons now and should be improving. My very first GNR was 2010 and I did it in 2h 34. For that reason I have engaged with Gio to follow the cross fit endurance plan.
Thursday 18th April
I'm booked onto the 2 week Crossfit Induction course starting Monday 22nd April. I feel really excited, but very nervous. I trust Gio and Simon - after all Gio was the one who got me from being a couch potato to doing a Great North Run, in 10 months.
I guess I'm ready; my head definitely is. Yes I'm a little over weight (to put it in to context I am in my healthy weight range in BMI terms, just want to be less flabby than I am now) but I feel pretty fit so I should be ok with this. Have decided that I'll not cut anything out between now and Monday - no dieting and definitely not giving up wine yet!!
Sunday 21st April
Tomorrow it is…. Measurements being taken tomorrow, as well as weight, % body fat. Oh, and just for a laugh I am going to get the most unflattering picture of me taken so at the end of the programme I can compare then and now.

HOOKSTONE ROAD CLOSURE - STARTS 15th APRIL

This means that they intend to close the road from 1900 til midnight each evening. The road closure will be from Oatland Drive to the A61 Leeds Road.

They will put diversions in place meaning that you can get too and from the box but you may need to give a little thought as to the route that you take. CrossFit Open

There have been tears, laughs, great times, frustrating times, but the open is over for another year!!

I'd like to say how impressed I have been at everyone's performances and work ethic over the past 5 weeks. Those of you that took part last year have all seen huge improvements, and those of you that took part for the first time have all performed brilliantly! The numbers of names that are already on the PB board is testimony to the hard work that everyone at the gym is putting in!

I know for one that the open has highlighted some of my weaknesses that I will be looking at adressing over the coming months. I hope the experience of having someone watching your reps has made you more aware of what you are doing in the normal class WODs. Celebrate you successes and take note of the areas in which you were weaker. You now have another year to prepare for what Mr Castro will through at us in 2014!!

Well done everyone. It is, and continues to be a pleasure to coach you all. Keep it up gang. You are all awesome!! T.D.
